Poultry

On large farms, laying hens are usually kept in cages, lack of exercise makes poultry prone to osteoporosis, which accounts for 20-35% of all poultry deaths. Vitro experiments shown that fatty acids, especially Ω-3 unsaturated fatty acids, promote the absorption of minerals by bones, thereby increase bone density.
One of the mechanisms by which Ω-3 promotes bone metabolism is to alter the production of arachidonic acids, especially prostaglandin PG, which are converted from polyunsaturated fatty acids. [1]
In one study, the addition of Schizochytrium algae powder to feed promoted egg production in laying hens and increased the level of Ω-3 in yolk, reducing Ω-6/Ω-3 value. [2]
